Headed to North Dakota to check out the Maah Daah Hey trail. It is a 144-mile non-motorized single track trail in North Dakota, that reaches from USFS Burning Coal Vein Campground 30 miles south of Medora to the USFS CCC campground 16 miles south of Watford City. The trail takes you through the badlands where wind and water have sculpted the landscape into pyramid domes, buttes and plateaus. We started from the CCC campground doing sections as we travelled south.
We stopped in Medicine Hat en-route to check out their mountain bike trails. Great cross country flow trails across grasslands and along the South Saskatchewan river. Trails are Mr. Burnside, DMZ, Tequila Sunrise, Tombstone, Dirt Nap, Grave Digger, Slow Burn, Death Valley.
Campsite at Nelson Reservoir on Highway 2 in Montana. Spectacular free campsite. Arrived just in time to capture evening light.
First section of trail on the Maah Daah Hey. (MDH) Camped at the CCC campsite just past the entrance to Teddy Roosevelt National Park. We biked the MDH past the junction with Long x and continued to the park. Turned back here and took Long x back to campsite about 28 ks. Beautiful ride up and down plateaus and across grasslands.
Second section was from the Bennett Campground. Road Bennett, Cottonwood to MDH to China Wall, back to junction with Bennett and back to campground – 28 ks.
Third section was from Magpie campground south to the Little Missouri River – 45 ks. White Tail creek uncrossable just before Missouri.
Fourth and final section before heading home was from Buffalo Gap Campground to Wannagan Campground return – 35 ks.
